St. Louis Post-Dispatch: METALLICA Hit All Right Spots In Bid To Reclaim Crown

Brian Q. Newcomb of St. Louis Post-Dispatch reviewed the Summer Sanitarium Tour when it came through town Friday (July 25).

"In a world where nothing succeeds quite like excess, METALLICA and the rest of its Summer Sanitarium tour cohorts may well be overachievers," he wrote. "That was certainly the case Friday evening for 25,000 hard music fans in the EdwardJones Dome.

"Eager to reclaim its crown as the reigning masters of metal, METALLICA did an 80-minute set culminated with blasts of flame to create the necessary impact of 'Blackened'. The first encore, 'Fuel', brought more of the same.

"The graceful 'Nothing Else Matters' led into the fast and furious 'Creeping Death', which included an impressive fireworks display. After they returned for encores, 'One' followed a battery of explosions simulating a battlefield. 'Enter Sandman' laid the 8-hour event to rest.

"Although METALLICA has a new album, they played only the disjointed 'Frantic' and the album's title track, 'St. Anger'. Of the last song, and the newer music, singer James Hetfield offered, 'A test of endurance, that song, for everybody.'

"The band fared better on the old-school hardcore of 'Master of Puppets', 'For Whom the Bell Tolls', 'Seek and Destroy' and the sing-along 'Sad But True'." Read more.
